Subterranean Masquerade - Temporary Psychotic State

Incredible EP despite the length - 94%

flaflaflooey, February 13th, 2005

There are two problems with SM's first release. The first one is merely a complaint with the length of the EP itself. Although, it is an EP, it only lasts a grand total of 17 minutes, which feels a bit short. The second problem is that I now have to anxiously wait for April to come, which is the scheduled release date for SM's first full-length release (according to The End Record's website) because it is damn good. This EP teases your ears for a mere 17 minutes and leaves you wanting more. Cruel…

Despite is short length, SM manage to cram a lot in those 17 minutes. Complex arrangements, female vocals, acoustic guitars, violins (plenty of them), talking, whispering, breathing and even some good ol' fashioned death growls manage to make it in. However, the EP does manage to make an impression on the listener despite the fact there are only two songs. Like the song title implies, “Temporary Psychotic State”, this EP seems like a trip into the mind of a psychopath at times. There is definitely a feeling of chaos, confusion and psychosis within the tight arrangements of the songs. Around 7:00 mark of track 2 “Observation Through Metamorphosis”, one can hear heavy breathing that conveys a feeling of frustration, fear and just overall creepiness, which goes well with the confusion that the song revolves around. Incredibly good.

If you happen to be a fan of Opeth, Tiamat or the earlier Pink Floyd, then get this EP as soon as possible so you too will have to wait till April. However, if you are not a big fan of progressive metal, hate violins, or dong want to pay $8 for two songs, then I would hesitate a bit more, but take a chance on this because this is just really good music.
