Bergthron - Faust für Faust

A Fourth Album...with a refined sound!! - 85%

WhenWolvesReturn, October 23rd, 2004

I have reviewed the other Bergthron releases, and I must say that this doesn't stand out from the rest. Bergthron has changed their sound quite a bit for this release, and it's not a bad change, but it's a significant enough change where they should've changed their name.

It's definitely not as primitive as their earlier releases (which aren't meant to be primitive anyway, and aren't, but more primitive than this...) but it still holds its own throughout it's mid-paced black metal opuses.

There are 3 real songs on here, with 1 ambient outro-ish track, which is kind of unnecessary. The cover art is pretty cool in my opinion, it just could've used a bit of silver color rather than a white, but cover printing for silver is fucking expensive so I'll let it slide. It comes in a very nice looking digipack, none the less.

This album also features some VERY tastefully done female vocals, that are impressive but wear a little thing later through the album. The songs are long, as always with Bergthron, but don't feature as much variation as their early songs. This is 3 songs and 3 songs ONLY, not 3 songs with 9 songs that could be seperated from the group. This isn't bad, the band keeps you interested throughout the whole album.

The guitar tone is just about perfect for this type of album, and it's a very well produced album for the genre. The bass is low, the drums are fast, the keyboards are synthy and corny! It can't get much better than this.

One thing that does annoy me about Bergthron is when they attempt to do the clean-male vocals. I have many problems with this because I don't think clean male vocals are a good idea in black metal, they're just not. They don't sound right under most circumstances (An exception being Ulver's Bergtatt) and they dont' add to the soundscapes for ambience. Bergthron needs to leave these behind, because if they did, they'd probably be closer to being my favorite band, and I assume it's the same with many others.

A great album, a RIPPING album, but definitely not for first time listeners of Bergthron.
