DSO For Dummies? - 65%

Thankfully I only got a five dollar tape because whatever magical thing they did to get on Southern Lord isn’t present here and just because you are from France doesn’t mean your as good as anything on Norma Evangelium Diaboli or Ajna.

All three songs open with a sample, the one of choice being a Gregorian chant (similar to the ones on SMRC) which is used as an intro to the first and third tracks. Then the actual song starts and eventually I just lost interest. The guitars are blended together (excluding the odd sounding solo in the second track) and create some kind of droning riff that pretty much repeats itself through out the entire demo. There vocalist sounds like he doesn’t belong in this style of black metal, he tries to sound like Mikko but overdoes it, all this guys rage would be better suited in something more towards death metal. The drums are mixed to high for what little they do; a couple blast beats and some mid tempo pounding hardly constitute there annoyingly high mix (the guitars are almost non existent and the vocals are mixed even higher than this).

I don’t know what these guys did to get signed to Southern Lord but I know that it isn’t present here. These guys try to mix elements from SMRC with traditional black metal and it doesn’t work. I can see myself trading or selling this when my tape rack becomes to full.
