Mourn in Silence - Redemption

Redemption - For being a poor CoB clone? No chance - 25%

Dace, December 30th, 2005

I’ll admit I first came across this in my younger days, when it was all “ohhh, Extreme Power Metal…that must be great!” Well, things have changed since then, mainly my views on things like that. As you might have guessed, Mourn In Silence are in that Children of Bodom school of “Harsh” Power Metal.

Are Mourn In Silence any good? Long and the short of it, is no they are not. There’s some nice moments here and there on the disc, you might nod your head a little (well, if you like Bodom in the first place) otherwise you’ll be bored or hate it anyway. It’s like Children of Bodom, only stripped of the production and any sort of variety in the playing. The band seems to have a handful of riffs and you get one or two on each track and they’re repeated over and over.

It’s the odd breakdown with some keyboards and blast beating, or guitar solo that keeps you from falling asleep. But then it’s the same sort of breaks in every song, so it’s just as bad in the end. The lead stuff has a surprisingly clean sound that makes them a little more interesting. But like the rest of the music, it goes from “hmm, could be nice” to “oh, this bit again, right on queue”.

The rest of the instruments are just like the guitar. There’s those keyboard bits or some blast beats like I said, but they sound the same and the come at the same point in all the songs. The vocals sound like Alexi as well (shocking that).

I think the only reason I can sit through this whole disc easily is because of how short it is. A runtime of only 25 minutes, with only four real tracks. We have an intro that could be on pretty much any Power, Melo Death, Black, Goth or such disc. An interlude track with keyboards and string effects that could be on any Power Metal album ever. And an outro that’s nearly 3 minutes long and is the sound of rain, someone breathing and some keyboards.

And the four real tracks are just what I described, boring CoB clone stuff that doesn’t match up.
