Svartr Strijd - En sista vind

A Final Wind for Man - 80%

Algiz88, February 24th, 2007

The title of this tape would be "A Final Wind" in English. This is a very good title for this tape. Few bands, with the exception of Hypothermia, can create such an eerie and suicidal feeling that Svartr Strijd has on this tape. This tape is filled with hymns to personal misery and anti-life. Most of the time such releases are a painful experience with a sound taken to extremes and extremely monotone. This is not the case on "En Sista Vind". This tape is actually holds a beauty totally compareable to bands like Burzum around "HLTO" and even Striborg around the brilliant "Mysterious Semblance"-tape. Here the influences has been taken and twisted into something that is pretty original even though the spirit of Burzum lies heavily on this tape. The vocals are tainted by a despair that sounds honest and real which makes the tape even stronger. Anyone into slow/mid-paced black metal should try to get a hold of this tape because it is a nice piece of self-despise. There is only on problem with this tape; there is absolutely no need for the rehearsaltracks. These feels like they have been put on here to make the playing time longer, nothing else. That is a minus for this tape. Other than that, this is a pretty good release. It is not something I listen to every day but know and then I pick it up and listen to it. And every single time i like it. It will be nice to hear the new tape when it is released later this year!

I prefer the original - 30%

Svartr Strijd is a Swedish band and according to reliable sources the man behind this band is the same man behind the band Black Circle. In Black Circle he more or less rips the sound of Judas Iscariot and calls it his own. In Svartr Strijd he tries to create the same kind of darkness that can be found on the black metal albums that Burzum released. Svartr Strijd isnĀ“t even close to create the same kind of darkness. This sounds like an terrible garage-version of the legendary Norwegian band. The biggest problem on
"En Sista Wind"(One Final Wind") is that there is nothing that can be called original. Every riff and arrangement has been heard before in much better versions. The tempo differs between mid and low and black metal of this type really needs strong guitarjob made with the heart not with carbon-paper. Some of the songs are ok but as i said it has been heard before in better versions. Where Burzum manage to create emotions of solitude and despair in a way that is both catchy and extremely dark Svartr Strijd just plays on without any feelings at all.
