Obscure German Melancholy - 90%

Oligarch, October 10th, 2004

This is the only Regnum release I have been able to get my hands on, and now I know why, this is amazing! Slow to mid-tempo obsure German black metal. Very minimal guitar parts that don’t change very often. This is very effective for inducing that “trance” state, which is so important in this style of BM. The guitar riffs are gloomy yet slightly melodic, making the perfect melancholic atmosphere. The vocals have a slight distortion to them. Normally I don’t like distortion on the vocals, but this is very subtle. Just enough to know its there, and it works well with the lo-fi analog sound of this recording.
The drumming is also very minimal. Basically keeping the tempo and not distracting from the mood. The recording came out with a little to much bass, but that can be corrected by simply adjusting your EQ.
All in all, I would recommend this for fans of Akitsa, or Nargaroth’s-“Geliebte des Regens.” If you can imagine a haunted analog version of that Nargaroth album, that will get you pretty close. A great release that is worth finding.
