Winterwitch - Time of the Wolves

Hey Guys want to have a drink with me? - 67%

Visionary, October 10th, 2005

This isn’t your standard black metal release. No evil riffs and terrifying vocals nor is there any flowery bullshit that some bands seem to go for. In fact this band don’t seem to take the black metal image seriously at all and decide to mock it instead. That is what some pagan black metal bands go for, the whole we are drunk so lets party! This is just all out fun black metal to drink to. The guitars are well played and produce upbeat catchy riffs. The vocalist has probably had a few to many beers and sounds quite funny for the most part. It sounds as if he is mimicking Abbath from “Battles in the North.” He seems to start off all evil and shit at the start of the second track and then starts screeching stuff like “Victory will be ours.” It is fairly amusing. Sometimes pagan like wails will erupt from his mouth at random intervals. At one point the just blabbers “To the mighty spirits of the north” as if he is mocking the Immortal track ‘Blashyrkh. A lot of it sounds like it could be improvised and it is amusing to listen to. The guitars are well played and produce a lot of fun upbeat riffs adding to the drunk atmosphere. They also sound immortal influenced now and then. Perhaps the guitars could have been more forward into the mix though to make it a bit more enjoyable but it doesn’t detract to much

To sum up, if you are looking for unholy or very atmospheric black metal then you are looking in the wrong place for this is none of that but just all out fun.
