A formal bludgeoning - 70%

BM_DM, October 6th, 2008

The cover isn't much to look at, and the title's daft (intentionally so, you'd hope) but over the years I have found it easy to acquire a taste for Armaggedon's particular form persistent aural bludgeon.

'Kill Yourself Or Die' is a representative sample of their art. Rough and ready, mid-drenched, guitar driven orthodox black metal is their stock in trade, bowling along at 100-120 bpm or so. The riffs at the core of Armaggedon's enterprise are normally engaging enough, with the structure of the vocal patterns typically bisecting riffs to add a little interest.

Yes, Armaggedon do wear their Darkthrone and Celtic Frost influences on their sleeve, but they have their own signature tricks too, namely a happy knack of delivering interesting counterpoints to the central riffs just at the point where you're thinking that you'd like to hear a little variety introduced into proceedings. The examples at around the 2.05 mark in 'Chambre a Gaz' or 1.55 into '13 Candles' are archetypal.

Nothing that you haven't heard before, I suspect, but reassuringly solid orthodox black metal -- reliable in the much the same way that Nocte Obducta or Forest of Fog were sure to please, in their time.
