Lefay - Symphony of the Damned

A solid debut re-recorded - 82%

mak28, March 7th, 2005

This is Morgana Lefay's debut album re-recorded. Originally it was recorded in 4 days and only 537 copis were pressed. The guys decided to go back in the studio in 99 as Lefay and give it a fresh take and release it to the masses.

This is a solid album from beginning to end with all the trademarks of classic ML. Charles is in fine form, the riffs are heavy and mean, and the solos ripping. Never the less, there is something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. The intensity seems to be what I point to. Beginning with the melodic mid-paced "Whore of Babylon" the album doesn't really knock your socks off and the slow build of the excellent title track makes you wait just a bit more. It almost makes it feel like the album really begins with track 3, "Fatal Illusions." Things continue on in the same vein though, alternating more moody/doomy songs with high speed thrashers. For that reason, at first, it feels like the album never gets going at full speed. Thankfully when familiarity sets in all the material begins to come alive. Soon those slower tunes grab hold and you, like myself, may find that the title track and the pounding Catacombs become your favorites rather than the more immediate tunes. In the end this is a typically solid Morgan Lefay/Lefay release. Maybe not the first album to pick up but another notch on the belt of a fantastic band. Again, these guys are sure to please fans of heavy power metal in the vein of Tad Morose, Savatage, Angel Dust and Nevermore. Check'em out!
