Ocultan - The Coffin

A Classic - 90%

wis, May 12th, 2007

The cretinism against Ocultan is a fact that all Brazilian Metal scene knows very well, a bipolarity where people choose their side: against the band or with the band. The justification for this war can be found in the way that Ocultan is growing and in the band's religion: Quimbanda( a religion with African roots), Quimbanda has conquered the mind of people all around the world as we can see in Dissection and Disiplin, and it's becoming more and more popular as orthodox cult to the devil.
Talking about the sonority of this album is a pleasure that trespass the opinion of every critics that I saw against the band. The originality is a mark on The Coffin, extreme beautiful riffs make you dream with cemeteries and melancholic scenes, you can feel influence of a lot of Nordish bands but the originality stays supreme. The vocalist did a very good work in all the album, some strange vocalizations can be heard all the time, but if you read the lyrics you surely understand why. The bass/drums work are very good but sometimes I think the drums could be a little more fast but this is not a problem as the album can't resumed in blasting beasts, the drummer did a good work in the third song called Lapides Funebres, search for it and you see why. The lyrics are all in portuguese, if you took the special “coffin edition” you'll find some musics in english but they are not equivalent to the portuguese versions, if you want lyrics talking about Quimbanda forget it(the track 8 is a exception), but you'll find it their old records. A truly classic of brazilian black metal and the best album with Ocultan's classic formation.
