Worthy follow-up - 86%

Brat1983, January 20th, 2005

Okay, I personally would think that the maids would have an extremely hard time making the follow-up to their masterpiece, Spooked, but they actually came out with a worthy follow-up. Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing is another great album from the maids:

1. Snakes In Eden
This song kicks serious ass! It's so fucking heavy and yet maintains a nice melody which has become PM's trademark. Do yourself a favor and don't miss out on this song. It's one of the best heavy metal songs of the 90's! (10/10)

2. Destination Paradise
At first I liked this song very much but I've sort of grown tired of it. Nevertheless, it's a cool song with a nice sing-a-long chorus (8/10)

3. Hell On High Heels
This is actually one of the better ballads from the maids. It can't be held up against Eye of the Storm (Future World) or Savage Heart (Jump The Gun), but it's a nice ballad song yet not too quiet and it's got a cool solo. Very likeable! (8/10)

4. When The Angels Cry
Okay, this isn't actually the best song, I've ever heard by the maids, but it's got enough class to make me avoid skipping it so it sure is a decent effort. (7/10)

5. Back Off
A headbangertune that really gets me going when cleaning my apartment. Quite nice :-) (8/10)

6. Only In America
Lyrically this song is about the good as well as the bad in the USA. Musically it's a cool song with a chorus I really can't avoid singing along to. It's really cool, this song! (9/10)

7. With These Eyes
A quiet ballad with a rather beautiful melody and nice lyrics. (8/10)

8. Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing
The titletrack is another cool track. I read somewhere that the title is found in an Aerosmith biography... It features some interesting bass playing by Kenn Jackson and a short, yet real ass-kicking solo by Ken Hammer. The chorus is another very likeable one. "Cause every little thing... cause anything worth doing... and all that's worthwhile... is worth overdoing... and this is my style!" (9/10)

9. Scent Of My Prey
Oh, this track really blasts me away! Features some of the best vocals Ronnie Atkins has ever done! Cool guitarline, lyrics, structure... Everything about this song is cool. Lyrically it tells the story of a night on the town... and next day you can't remember anything and you read about a girl being raped in the news paper... "is it true what the papers say? Could it really be me?" (10/10)

10. Face Me
In PM's native land, Denmark, several members of the press have been critizising the band throughout the last 10 years because the band insist to be sticking to the old heavy metal formula that they know best and that their fans enjoy. This song is a strike back against the press. It's got a real cool rhythm and some nice guitarwork by mr. Hammer. Really cool song! "Then again, I'd rather go to Hell than ride the trend and prostitute myself" (9/10)

11. Loveshine
The album's weakest track happens to be the last one. It's not particularly bad but it's not particularly good either. It's never really meant anything to me, but it's got a decent chorus that one can sing along to if you haven't turned the stereo off when Loveshine began. (6/10)

So all in all, the album is not a new Spooked, but it's a very worthy follow-up. It's incredible that the maids can maintain such an everlasting quality on their albums. Cool effort!
