Extreme Speed Satan

This is the third full-length release from Ammit, a Chilean band that plays black/thrash metal.

The guitar sound here is dirty, with plenty of fuzz. The drumming isn't particularly remarkable, but it does its job well enough. There's some cool bass work here and there, especially on "Abominations". The vocals are yelled, and sound quite raw. They could be a bit better, but they fit in well with the old-school atmosphere of the album, so I can't really complain.

Ammit's songwriting is simple and direct, reminiscent of Hellhammer and early Sodom. Each song is built from a handful of catchy, dirty riffs, with backing bass. Occasional lead guitar parts lend some variety to the mix. The lyrics are blasphemous, and delivered with plenty of conviction. Some of the moments on this album are pure genius - the chorus on "Pact With the Devil", the twisted opening riff of "Abominations", for example.

This album does a fine job of re-creating the feeling of early 80's black metal. The songs are distinctive, with plenty of power, and the atmosphere is just as raw and filthy as it ought to be. There's nothing even remotely new here, but for those who hold first wave bands in high regard, this should be an automatic purchase.
