PainMiseryDeath, June 5th, 2004

Spain's Night to Die play progressive influenced death metal for the mostpart, with a heavy reliance on melody, but often switch into slower modes that generally bore me. The vocals are mainly gruff, reminding me a bit of Chuck Schuldiner of Death, or for a closer comparison, The Fifth Sun (a band with a release 3 years afrer this one mind you).

The first and shortest track, called Childhood Memories, is probably the best one on the EP. It reamins heavy (or at least distorted) throught the whole song with a lot of riffs reminding me again of Death. Early on in the song there are some clean vocals, sounding like they would fit better on top of doom metal, so they don't fit with this song. The bass is very audible in some of the slower parts of the song, and the drums work very well with the guitars. Enjoyable shit.

A Piece of Soul starts with some boring piano, and some vocals that are not alltogether clean, and not alltogether harsh. It's along the lines of a gothic whispery type of voice, very unpleasing. For a minute and fourty seconds the song slowly plods along untill finally some guitars come in and make it listenable. The song drifts off into a guitar solo, more of the same riffing, and finally a bass outro that is too long. The song is altogether boring and too long. Shit.

So the third and final track, called The Storm Is Coming, starts out with some slow guitars and irritating indian chant-like vocals, presumably of Spanish origin. Then a slow little solo takes us into a section with some spoken words, and finally, after nearly two minutes, the solid riffing and gruff vocals find their way into the song. Not for long though, it switches back to the spoken word part and back to the gruff part again. Then, just past the five minute mark, after the song just comes to a stop, there is a flamenco piece seemingly thrown in randomly. A nice solo on top make this an enjoyable minute of music, but this song is over eight minutes.

In summarize, the music this on this ep is of rather low quality. Sure the first song is good, download worthy for sure, but why bother when Death do it so much better. I suppose this might appeal to you if you are a fan of both death metal (notably Death) as well as prog, though this is one of those hit or miss cd's. Not a high quality ep, but still listenable...the production is good enough to enjoy it.
