VII Gates - Fire, Walk with Me

Not Exactly On Fire - 55%

7 Gates is a capable metal outfit that covers all of the traditional tricks of the trades of thrash and pop metal with a fair amount of success on tracks like “Under The Crossed Bones” and “Bounded By Hate”.

These guys come at things from more of a Poison meets Metallica approach musically, making the group seem quite tame in comparison to other European acts. Unfortunately, the material here, however well put together in terms of production can seem lackluster at times.

On “Fire, Walk With Me”, you have a case where although the band are very good in terms of performance, there’s just not enough variation in the band’s music in order to make a significant impact on the listener. The group often times lacks originality in its performances as well. “Tormented” finds vocalist Criss Blackburn coming off as a less than powerful, metalized Freddie Mercury.

Guitar devotees may have an interest in this record if for nothing else, there’s some great shredding going on during the solos. About a thousand bands have attempted this style and although many have done it better, if you are a serious fan of the more traditional metal of twenty years ago, this may suffice as decent entertainment.
