Lividity - Fetish for the Sick

Absolutely Essential Deathgrind - 92%

RancidFeces, March 16th, 2007

When I pulled up Lividity's page here on the Metallum I was shocked to see that there has not been a single review for any of this band's releases. That being said, I felt obliged to review this 20 minute EP. This is certainly one of the best deathgrind releases I have heard. This came out back in '97 on Ablated Records.

The song structures here are very catchy. Guitar riffs stick in your head long after the CD has stopped. In fact, I find myself playing tracks off this album in my head when I'm listening to something boring or lame. The vocals switch off between deep guttural growls and high pitched screams. I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe any effects are used on the vocals. This is the basic formula that so many deathgrind bands nowadays try to emulate, with little success. Drums are played flawlessly throughout this EP. The samples are great and fit each song perfectly. They are not just useless horror movie samples pulled randomly like so many Mortician songs.

Nearly all the tracks are performed perfectly, there are one or maybe two songs that aren't up to par with the rest of the EP but I wouldn't call them throw-away tracks. Pussy Lover is one of the standouts with the classic sample from Dusk til Dawn and the song itself is catchy as hell.

If you are someone that's just starting to get into this style of music, or even just this band (although, if you're into deathgrind and you haven't heard of Lividity you deserve a slap in the face with a 12" rubber cock) check out this release or their 1st full-length "The Age of Clitoral Decay." This EP is absolutely essential for fans of the genre (did I already say that?) Anyway, like I was saying, so many bands that attempt brutal death or deathgrind use this EP as a blueprint. So check out where it all basically started. I'm not trying to say that deathgrind was invented here, but this EP is most definitely a milestone.

Now is the time to buy if you don't already have this classic, for it was re-released in 2004 with 15 bonus live tracks from one of their shows in Germany from 2003.

So, in closing, GET THIS NOW! If you're a fan of brutal death or death/goregrind. If you don't like death metal and you don't like grind, there's a pretty good chance you're going to think this sucks ass.
