Descend Into Nothingness - Darkened Reality - 80%

Alkin, April 21st, 2004

I've always asked myself what could possibly get out of Abitibi! Sorry for my ignorance, but my knowledge of this part of the country is quite near to zero! But Descend Into Nothingness has literally punched me in the face! Like to tell me; Hey! Look at us! We do exist!

By merging melodious with extreme Metal, Rouyn-Noranda's five-piece band Descend Into Nothingness releases their first album by the name of Darkened Reality. Like we could guess with a title like that, Descend Into Nothingness shows us their own vision of the humans beings, its behaviours, fears and interpretations of death. An interesting concept, but I don't really fully appreciate that it's when mixed with inaudible lyrics. You'll have to judge by yourself…

DIN's influences are difficult to find. A little of everything has been used, but I noticed a bit of something like Martyr in their music. Musically talking, the album is magnificent. Real pros are showing us what they can do, and with success. But since there is always a bad side, it looks like they've wanted to put too much in that album. A good example would be the drums. There are so many variations that it does not sound really synchronous. Some weird base lines are introduced when all the instruments are quiet. The bassist is very good, but the drum/guitar mix buries his work. Guitar riffs sounds really technical, but not very addictives. All of those points give us an opinion of a very cacophonic album. Joel, the guitarist/signer has a very good vocal, and he's also an excellent guitarist. The best would be to see what he can do with both of them at the same time, on the stage.

A wonderful album on the technical side, but something is missing on the melodious side. I have to say though that it's a good debut album compared to all the bands that considers themselves melodic. To all fans of brutal music, get this one! But melodic fans, search elsewhere.
