Advent - The Dawn

Mildly unnecessary but still decent on occasion - 53%

PainMiseryDeath, July 9th, 2004

Advent is sort of a hard band to classify musically. There's the obvious black metal sound largely due to the use of tremolo riffs, keyboards, and the harsh vocals, as well as the clean vocals, which at times have a folkish feel to them, perhaps due to the vocalists Italian accent. Some of the guitar riffs have a lot more in common with death metal, and theres a bit of growled vocals that would fit that classification as well. In addition, the songwriting and riffs have a very progressive feel to them. So does it work together and sound good? Sure.

A deathier version of the style Borknagar has paved wouldn't be too far off as a comparison. But this is not Borknager. A lot of the songs get boring with their unnecessary slower melodic parts with the clean vocals. I feel Advent would do better for themselves losing a lot of their progressive elements and sticking with the death or black metal aspects. The first three songs on this cd, which are less progressive than the rest, are actually from their second demo Valholl, and I feel that the song Valholl is probably the best one on here. Yet, when I'm in the mood for it, this is a decent cd to listen too. Sure there's better, but this is not all bad. Perhaps checking out their Valholl demo would be a better place to start than with this cd.
