Lycanthropy - The Veils of Sorrow

I'm surprized there was already a review for this. - 95%

I somehow managed to get a copy of 'veils...' in a second hand store. When I herd this I hadn't really herd much Dark Throne. At the time I was listening to Old Man's Child and Dark Funeral. This cd took me by storm, the rawness of the guitar and drums was enough to make any black metal 'basard' happy. The musicianship is much more complex then most Dark Throne veins (Dark Throne who I would later recognise as the obvious influence for 'veils...'). The drums are very good as well, not hard but they fit so well with the guitar. The bass lines are even well written and for the most part in league with the guitar. This is USBM similar to Judas Iscariot in someways but I believe that they have broken up. This is the cd that got me into underground raw bm. If you want to find this cd I'd say you'd have better luck finding Vlad Tepes since no one in the scene even knows of this band.

Superb USBM - 90%

Lycanthropy is a band that I dare call "fuckin awesome." They have great musicianship and intelligent lyrics, not the usual hail satan stuff. For this release, they slow things down a bit, but there are still very fast parts, but also the addition of slower, doomier parts as well. The production is clear, but not overdone, as the raw feeling is retained very well. There are also a few keyboards on this too, but they are by no means overdone.

All the songs on here are great and very well thoughtout. The songwriting is top notch, something that sometimes seems to elude a BM band of this nature. I have no favorites, but the song that standouts the most to me is Invocation To Luna, with its nice acoustic intro and the raw, yet clear guitars and drums. Also the vocalist does a fine job on this EP too. His vocals are not annoying, which is something that plagues a lot of BM vocalists. They are not high pitched, more of a raspy scream. Think of Nocturno Culto.

All in all, this is a nice little EP to add to your BM collection, whatever BM you find the most interesting, raw or keyboard saturated.
