Nokturnal Mortum - Return of the Vampire Lord

Title track alone worth 10 times the price!!! - 93%

Antikrist, February 13th, 2004

I got this EP in a trade with my friend and popped it into the CD player. After about 50 seconds of sounds of a forest in winter and a wolf howling, my jaw dropped. The song had begun with one of the most beautiful yet simple melodies I have ever heard. Unlike many bands which when they find a good melody repeat it over and over, Nokturnal Mortum use a skill of subtly varying the melody to create a progress of change and then after a while return to the initial melody. Brilliant keyboard work and the vocals are done just right. I really can not explain to you how excellent this track is so I must just advise you to listen to it. The other two tracks on this EP are 2 from Nokturnal Mortum's old days without much keyboard but some nice melodic guitar riffs. They are somewhat underproduced but they can be heard easily and there isn't too much background noise. But the highlight of this and the reason the band released it was to get out Return Of The Vampire Lord, one of the best black metal songs ever. It's your choice whether to get this EP or find a version of Lunar Poetry with the track as a bonus or just download it from the internet but if you're a fan of melodic black metal (or even if you're not) you have to hear it...
