Imperial Crystalline Entombment - Imperial Crystalline Entombment

excellent black metal - 100%

The_Emperor, July 5th, 2004

“We are fucking IIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!!!!” So begins the debut demo from this excellent black metal band from the US (Waldorf, MD if you want to be specific). It is unknown exactly when this band formed, in fact not much is known about the band or the members that comprise it. The band consists of members Bleak, Blisserred, IceSickKill, and Mammoth, yet what instrument each of them plays is unknown. Each member of the band is adorned with a white robe and an expressionless mask, preferring to keep their identity a mystery. According to the band they recorded this demo “in a small shelter in a vast frozen landscape during the great winter of Ravaskeith’s 8th eclipse in order to record this three song promo CD of truly winter inspired black metal.” Regardless of where they recorded it they need to continue recording there, because this demo kicks some serious metal ass!!

As stated there are three songs on this demo, and they are Astral Frost Invocation, Apocalyptic Blizzard Regime, and Behold Thy Frozen Arctic Kingdom. With song titles like this the lyrical theme isn’t hard to figure out, but it also brings the band comments about being Immortal clones. Whether the band is influenced by Immortal (R.I.P.) I do not know, but I can assure you these guys are not a clone in the least. Each track is filled with riffs galore, a solid bass sound, pounding drums, and your typical screeched vocals. The drums are your typical blast beat style, however the songs are not simply incessant blasting. Granted they are used for most of the songs, however there are times where the drummer changes up the rhythm and goes for a more typical drum beat along with plenty of double bass. As for the vocals, as stated, they are your typical screech but yet they are understandable. Unlike some black metal bands, you can actually understand what the vocalist is saying. There are some really nice screams during these three tracks, and the music never becomes boring instead it keeps your attention throughout.

This band has created one hell of a demo here, and I certainly look forward to hearing more material by them in the future. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys black metal ala Emperor, Immortal, etc. The band is currently recording their debut full-length album, so be sure and keep an eye out for that. This band is worth your time, do yourself a favor and buy this demo and their full-length when it comes out. You won’t regret it!!
