Pretty Maids - Planet Panic

The maids rocks on! - 84%

Brat1983, January 26th, 2005

Pretty Maids’ 10th full length record features a couple of huge surprises, that one wouldn’t expect on a PM album, but the maids are still the maids and they are in fairly good shape here!

Virtual Brutality
This track starts with the most down tuned and dark riff that Ken Hammer has ever played. Really cool. The track itself is one of the heaviest motherfuckers the maids have ever played, and it’s got a touch of modern keyboard sound that one normally wouldn’t associate with PM, but it fits the track extremely well (10/10)

Playing God
A track about genetic issues. Also a really heavy one, but without the keyboard. The guitar sound on this track as well as several of the others is some of the heaviest shit ever by the maids. Kick ass solo! (9/10)

He who never lived
Starts with a 3 second drum part by Michael Fast and then turns into a midpaced headbanger. The track itself is nothing special. I don’t like the chorus, but the verse has a nice melody line. Nice solo from Ken Hammer. (6/10)

Face of My Enemy
Oh oh oh, now wait a second. Cool cool track. Really a mean bastard. Nice rhythm, extremely well played guitar, cool bass and then it has this one keyboard note playing in the background. And Ronnie Atkins’ voice is MARVELLOUS! Really a heavy metal monster!! (10/10)

Not What You Think
This track is nothing special, but it’s still above average. Has an okay melody line in both verse and chorus. Ronnie Atkins sings it well, the guitar solo is decent and sometimes you might find yourself banging your head to it J (7/10)

Natural High
This is the obligatory ballad. No PM album without a ballad of some kind, and this actually works pretty well. It’s not so quiet and slow that you fall asleep, and it has a great sing-along chorus. Fine ballad (8/10)

Who’s Gonna Change Our World
Starts with a short drum solo by Michael Fast, and despite the fact that he ain’t the most skilled drummer on the planet, he still knows his shit and does it well. Then it turns itself into an extremely cool headbanger. It’s sort of a “back to the roots” track, since it has both “feet” solid planted in the 80’s. Cool melody line in both chorus and verse. You just gotta sing along that chorus! Great guitar solo by mr. Hammer. (10/10)

Worthless
Another extremely cool track. Things slow down in the verse and then the chorus starts with Ronnie Atkins screaming “YOU’RE WORTHLESS”. That’s fucking great. Brilliantly played heavy metal! (10/10)

One Way To Rock
Say what?? A Sammy Hagar cover? Sammy Hagar was okay as the leadsinger of Van Halen, but most of his solo material sucks bloody ass, and this one is one of them. Why did the maids choose to cover this one? It’s very unlike their normal kind of music! The only reason why I gave it a 2 is because the maids at least play it better than Hagar ever did, but that doesn’t say much. This song just sucks! (2/10)

Enter Forevermore
The album closer is this very beautiful ballad-ish song. Beautiful verse and extremely well written chorus that also is extremely catchy. Perfect album closer. Talk about closing an album in superb style!! (10/10)

When it all comes down, this album is a really amazing one, but it’s a shame that there are 2 songs that feels really out of place (He who never lived + One way to rock). Without these 2, this album could have ranked among the best from the maids, but I have to be objective and face the fact that those songs are here. It’s a pity, but hey, delivering another album with so many great songs on is quite an achievement, so it really deserves a couple of additional points. This album won’t let you down in any way.
