Not as good as "Black Medieval Art" - 73%

KayTeeBee, March 16th, 2005

I consider Nerthus' 2004 album, Black Medieval Art, to be one of the most, if not the most medieval album ever. This album is still pretty medieval, with all the amusing interludes, but it's nothing like BMA. This album still shows that these guys have talent, but some of their ideas aren't well established, and the drumming is quite poor at times. Let's take "Entrall Charm" as an example. The riffs are pretty good, even if sometimes lack direction, but the drums during the 1:30 riffs are so annoying, it sort of ruins the riff.

Also, this album is heavier, and has a much more majestuous feel to it. The interludes on this one feel more like "castle" music, if you see what I mean (without losing their huge middle-age feel). Some of the heavier songs that come closer to black metal have to be tracks like "Gorgeous Ocean" or "Scars In Flesh". The drums in those 2 songs weren't that bad either, so they both satisfy the listener in terms of riffs and drum work. The vocals on this one are also more harsh, and that's probably why anyone would call this a black metal album.

Overall, not a bad album, but sometimes the riffs aren't detailed enough, or they're ruined by the horrible drums which appear at time. Only for huge fans of middle-ages music or

Nerthus.
