Forlorn Legacy - Dead Man's Fear

Complex and brutal, but still beautiful - 88%

makaze, October 2nd, 2004

Some time ago, I have presented third demo of Croatian melodic death metal band Forlorn Legacy. It's entitled "Omega" and was released in 1999. This time, I would like to present their latest release, fourth demo-album, entitled "Dead Man's Fear". This demo was recorded in april 2001, and first time I got it into my CD player, I noticed difference in production. It's much cleaner, each instrument is clear and loud, but they definetly need some low tones in overall sound, while pitch-high tones could be 20% less. Anyway, it's better production, but with few bugs. I hope that guys from Forlorn Legacy will do even better on next release. Talking about the music itself, I could say it's more melodic, especially guitars, which are inspired by swedish melodic death. Both guitars sometimes are going into harmonies, so playing is much more technical, or I could say Forlorn Legacy is now technical/melodic death metal. Vocals are more brutal and growling. It's interested looking at band's evolution and I could say that now they have defined their own style, like band Agonize (from Bosnia & Herzegovina), but Agonize has much more Death's sound it their veins, while Forlorn Legacy are more original. Their music it really refreshing, so I must say I was pleased listening to "Dead Man's Fear". First song on this album, "Dead Man's Fear" is a bit heavier than the other ones on the album, with faster drumming and growling/scream vocals. It's the only song that has Death's influence (from "Symbolic" period). Title track, "Dead Man's Fear", is more melodic, with both clean and growl vocals, singing sometimes together. Not bad, but I think they should do only cleans, or only growls. Like last album, this one features instrumental song, entitled "Desert". It's filled with classical acoustic guitars and short electric guitar solo. Relaxing and soft song. Next song, "Numb" is more complex and slower, so don't expect to understand it on first few listens. "Somehow" is not bad, first half is a bit boring, but the finish is fantastic! End for the end, "Welcome" has a great mix between melody and brutality. Guitar solo is in old-school metal style, or maybe in a hard rock/metal style. Overall, this is good album for all you progressive freaks, melodic and brutal... Forlorn Legacy is maybe the best death metal band around here and I hope they will find their way to major record labels.
