Hateful - Coils of a Consumed Paradise

Quite decent debut - 73%

soulfaust, June 11th, 2010

Guitarist/vocalist Danielle was so cool to sent me this debut by this Italian Death Metal trio HATEFUL. Not knowing the material on their split EP from 2006 I can't give you any comparison between these two. With Coils Of A Consumed Paradise the band ranks itself in the upperclass of the Italian underground, fitting well between all these technical outfits. Very mature and controlled tunes clocking mostly under three minutes and executed by three very capabale musicians. As soon as opener 'Painting the Abyss' start, you'll notice the technical level is again very high but luckily these guys don't show off or get lost too in the usual maze of breaks and needless shifts. This stuff is nowhere aggressive or brutal (a common thing in Italian Death Metal) and therefore misses necessary power to impress. Something I really missed in the blasting parts, because now they don't add anything! It's more leaning on a constant groove in the guitar department which reminded me of ANATA and OBSCURA and mixing cool patterns with these hammering outbreaks. To get a clue of how this sounds, think of PSYCROPTIC and OBSCURA on half speed. Another point of criticism is that the production of the guitars and especially bass could have been heavier to increase power. Despite this, it's a cool record. Decent and mature but not groundbreaking, sorry.
