Vesperian Sorrow - Beyond the Cursed Eclipse

A Desperate, majestic scream - 70%

SouthernWind, February 21st, 2006

The debut album of VESPERIAN SORROW doesn't actually look like a USBM album. If most of the Black Metal they make in those lands is kind of raw and old-school, these Texans give a symphonic offering, clearly inspired by DIMMU BORGIR but certainly with a higher dose of fastness and violence, giving a desperate, almost schizophrenic atmosphere all the time. The keyboards play a truly important role, being very dense but misplaced by times, and the vocals are no less than a desperate scream from the abyss.

"Beyond The Cursed Eclipse" is a very Melodic Black Metal album, with variety and a sorrowful ambient than bewitches. On the other hand, it has a much more heavy and oppressive sound than the average, and it shows that the symphonic branch of the genre can be incredibly dark and passionate when made with the heart.

The main problem of this album is that it can be too bombastic by times, and so the listener can become very tired after a few songs. Nevertheless, It is highly recommended for those interested in underground Melodic Black Metal, because VERPERIAN SORROW do know how to create epic, embracing and corrosive music fulfilled by the darkest feelings.
