Abadden - Sentenced to Death

A very promising debut! - 97%

Abadden is a four-piece band from Dunstable, England who have been around since 2007, they released this brilliant debut "Sentenced to Death" in 2010. There have been a lot of so called "retro" thrash metal band rising the past years, some better than others, but this one is surely great! This band sure has a future!

I was not really sure what to expect when I started listening to this album, would it be just another boring album or really awesome? (The cd cover gave me some doubts also) Well. I found out. And the result: Fucking awesome. I've caught myself playing air drums and air guitar to this hell of an album, consisting of sharp riffs everywhere and great long guitar solos! And the drumming fits it all nicely, there is a great variety in it.

The vocals here are pretty different compared to other thrash releases, Dan Pool's vocals really sound like Ihsahn (Ihsahn's solo albums that is) but I would not really consider this any black-thrash release. On the other hand, Ihsahn's solo career is not considered black metal either? I think the vocals fit nicely in here, maybe you have to get used to them at first if you have an issue with rather harsh vocals in thrash. I don't think it should change anything, because instrument-wise you are going to miss A LOT. On the other hand, I guess it's also a plus to still have your neck!

This debut is fucking awesome really. Go get it, you will not regret it. I wish the best in the future for this band!

SENTENCED TO DEATH by Abadden (2010) - 76%

Finally, we have here again some thrash for some ear-fucking session that will make your ears bleed (again). Since we see new thrash bands like Evile, Municipal Waste and Gama Bomb, let us hear some noise from Abadden, from Britain, who just released their Debut album, “Sentenced to Death”.

First of all, the production gave the album a modern feel, like other new thrash acts, which left the bass more or less inaudible. What’s interesting here are Dan Pool’s vocals (or rather, rasps) that sound like a cross of Ihsahn’s and Petri’s (ex-Norther). Meanwhile, the drums, fortunately, aren’t just simple one-twos, since you could hear here some great drum fills after the other, series of galloping bass drums and an extensive use of cymbals. The riffs are, simply said, unoriginal, which is one thing that reminds me of Evile’s “Enter the Grave”. However, the execution of these riffs was so damn solid, considering the fact that Abadden is new in this business.

I find three things here that are very much enjoyable. First, we have the soloing that features some more influences besides thrash. Just hear the two-minute epic soloing at “Violent Assault” and you’ll definitely feel the melancholy. On the other hand, the solo in “The Hand That Feeds” could be nothing else but death metal-influenced thrash metal soloing. The second thing is the major riff changes in the songs. A good example here could be “Atomic Devastation”, whose music changes from and to the chorus, and even through the soloing. Lastly, if a song lacks at either (or even both), well, it still has its sheer ferocity with it, particularly “My Misery”.

Well, the album also has the same problems present on other solid but unoriginal releases (and maybe even more). First, the riffs, just like what I’ve said a while ago. Second, we have the lack of variety in the tempo, since you’ll hear here eight tracks of fast thrash, with generally no change in speed. Well, I hope these guys improve though. If you like fast and solid thrash with raspy vocals, then this could be the thrash for you.
