Retch - Reinsertion of Aborted Remnants

Gore! Gore! Gore! Give me More! - 95%

AnakwanarSek, February 5th, 2007

Retch is a really amazing goregrind/brutal death metal act from California, one of those bands that stand above the description of genre and style and makes powerful and vibrant music.

The drums are a machine, but a well programmed machine, cyber fast with insane fills and rolls, but it doesn't get boring in the way that your average Mortician release might. The vocals are so gutural and deep, sounding like a mutant frog vomiting up his meal, though there are some higher rasps from time to time. The bass is low and strong mixing well with the anti-harmonic riffs. It's not lost in the mix either which is nice. Retch also does an excellent job of throwing in samples, like a quick sound bite from George Carlin in the middle of "Spreading the Stumps" to surprise you.

There isn't anything I can fault on this release. Each song is strong on its own, brutal enough to blow you away, but diverse enough to keep you interested (which is an issue with some grind music, namely that it gets boring fast). The production is top notch and crisp and the art is excellent. If you're looking to hear some goregrind pick up Retch, or if you're an old fan of the genre this might get you back into the game.......the game of hacking people to pieces!
