Brocken Moon - Schattenlicht des Mondes

Too much wolves, ravens and stormy weather - 65%

Lixivia, October 17th, 2005

Oh!! Creepy organ pipe sound-like keyboard... Wolves howling and stormy weather. Not as scary I thought Brocken Moon was. I was expecting a lot from this band after have read reviews of this demo in other Internet metal sources. Cold, raw and extreme emotions coming from a dark/black metal is what I want. Instead, Brocken Moon tries to keep it dark with some kind of cheesy use of a keyboard. In fact, I just found the first part of the Schattenlicht des Mondes demo rather boring. The vocal is ok. It's a tortured scream vocal, but nothing amazing. The riffs are good too. Nevertheless, something lacks to this band. I think it's in the song structure that Brocken Moon is failing. There is too much space giving to the keyboard in my opinion. And the first part of this demo shows all defaults of the band. Just another nonworthy black metal band. It reminds me when my friends were 14 and try to keep it real in their parent's basement.

However, the second part is amazing. After a lightning crash, a kind of melancholic clean guitar riff and a keyboard solo, pain is rising! The guitar is raw and the riff forced me to headbang in a slow-paced way. Now that's dark black metal that is worthy! At last the band melt together to offer a real performance. Just for this, Brocken Moon has a higher rate and is worthy to look at.

With a lower quality sound, Pain rehearsal is very similar to the Schattenlicht des Mondes demo. Again, the band gives a great place to the keyboardist and to the animal kingdom samplers. But now, it's ravens! Some good riffs but as mentionned nothing amazing. The rehearsal is mostly instrumental.

As a matter of fact, I'm not the kind of black metal fan who can't stand keyboard. Some do it skillfully, other don't. Brocken Moon does it poorly.
