Madder Mortem – Misty Sleep - 78%

ruigeroeland, August 15th, 2005

Simply put, Madder Mortem creates female-fronted dark metal, with the emphasis on dark. But there is certainly more to it. The band has evident doom metal influences, but also incorporates "The 3rd and the Mortal"-styled experimentation into their compositions (although not too much). The most notable aspect of their music is the dark voice of their front-lady Agnete Kirkevaag, who is largely responsible for the "dark" and somewhat "spooky" feel of the songs.

Although this demo does not contain real killer tracks (as their later albums would), the demo certainly makes for an enjoyable listen. Most songs concentrate on heavy guitar riffs and the vocals of Agnete. Sometimes acoustic parts are thrown in the mix to create pauses in the songs (as is the case in the song "He Who Longed for the Stars").

Highlight of the demo, would be the closing and title track "Misty Sleep", mainly because of the memorable riff and the catchy chorus.

If you are really into Madder Mortem, this demo is worth checking out. If you are new to their music I would recommend you to check out one of their albums first (such as "Mercury", their debut album, which contains most of the songs featured on the demo as well).
