Mindfield - Be-low

gothic death metal with clean vocals anyone??! - 75%

SoulSeekJay, July 6th, 2004

No I am not starting a new sub-genre here, its just that,
Mindfield started as a death metal outfit and developed into a gothic and doom metal band to finally find their sound in atmospherical and melodic metal. Here and there they still add some gothic elements to their style and combine it with playful and moshy guitar work and I also enjoy the right-placed keyboard sounds. But this "style" takes time to get used to.

This brings me to the sophisticated guitar work on this CD. And this is one of the reasons for the lasting impression this record left on my ears. The guitar players are two virtuosoes and change between very atmospheric sounds, melodic rock riffs and straight forward metal. Another component to their extraordinary sound is the clean vocal delivery because (brace yourself) there is absolutely no screaming or even shouting on this record, just pure and passionated singing, you remember singing? dont you?

When the vocals are supported simply by piano-sounds and laid-back guitar work you can recognize all the beauty of this record. If you like to experience metal with an outstanding mood you should really try Mindfield...And if you aren't that much into harmonic and experimental metal you should listen to this album more than just one time. You'll need some time to get into it but it's very very interesting music!
