Amethyst - From a Thousand Years of Slumber

Metal without emotion is worthless - 63%

PseudoGoatKill, November 10th, 2006

This EP by Amethyst proves that no matter good you are at playing, if you don't have the passion or emotion then you're music becomes boring.

The work on this album on a technical level is fairly good, and these guys definately know how to play. The guitar riffs found on this album are reminiscent of early Amorphis in some areas such as the intro to "Forlorn Fatality" and the acoustic song "The Void", but on most of the album the guitar playing lacks emotion and innovation.

It would be pointless of me to fully describe the drums and bass, since they too suffer from a lack of innovation. To make matters worse the production values on this album while not poor, are not great, and they actually make the songs sound even more boring.

The vocals on this album which are done in a death/black vocal style are so empty and emotionless that you have to wonder what the band was trying to achieve. Black Metal, and Death Metal singers for the most part display a cold hatred in their vocals. Even Doom metal singers display an aire(sp) of sorrow in their voices. This singer shows absolutely none, and makes me wonder if the guy is actually a robot.

The only worthwhile song on this album is the acoustic "The Void" which is beautiful and melancholic. Unfortunately by the time it comes on, it's too little, too late.
