Deathguy - The Secondary Quest: The Legend of Romancer

What happened? Is this really Deathguy? - 80%

natrix, April 1st, 2004

I love Deathguy's debut EP, Introduction. It was death metal the way it's supposed to be done: precise, violent, and melodic only when it had to be. Don't get me wrong, The Legend of Romancer is good, but it's NOT what you'd expect and some people would probably be very disappointed with it.
The direction has gone to a total melodic death metal, with some gothic influences. I'd even say that it could be kind of a melodic black metal, but that would definately seem out of place, and put this album in a bad light. This is better than Cradle of Filth, but it seems like Deathguy was listening to them pretty heavily when they recorded this. There are lots of melodic riffs and keyboards everywhere, with Thanit using his crazy screaming most of the time (there are many moments where he uses a slow spoken passage, or a death growl).
Where this band does the whole melodic death/black thing right is that they don't forget to throw in some violent parts, or go do something slow and heavy. Sure, there are quite a few melodies and lush keyboards, but there's a lot of pretty ugly stuff going on in the same songs. I like the mixture, it's original for sure, but I would have preferred something more in the vein of the EP.
The production is really stunning for a beginning band from Thailand, but they still use a drum machine (a drummer is listed, but c'mon...those sounds are not real drums). Don't worry though, this is not so bad.
Lyrics are in English and tell the story of some evil swan or something. The best track is the "bonus" track "Beheader." If you can find the lyrics to this song, they're fucking funny. Imagine Chris Barnes and Glen Benton writing a song together after getting really drunk and forgetting lots of grammar rules. It's hilarious, and the music is closer to that of the EP.
As a bonus, they've added two tracks from the debut EP, as well as a new song. I've heard that they're going to go in a death/grind style, but I hope they don't end up sounding like Cryptopsy or Dying Fetus. Deathguy got it down pat on Introduction, let's hope they can do it again.
