Lipid - Hagridden

Straight up stripped down old-school riff city!!! - 89%

Brutalnet, December 7th, 2006

I don't think that reviewers have been fair with this disc, to be honest. Lipid plays a style of metal that is best equated to late-life Sepultura with Max that isn't boring.

I've had this disc for a couple of years at this point and it's one that I just can't tire of.

Lipid exercises effectivity through simplicity, keeping the riffs basic, but keeps the head bobbing. This release actually reminds me an awful lot of Maimed's (US) 1991 5-song EP. Chuggy riffs, nothing overly fast or technical, but lasting effective riffing keeps this disc chugging along.

This disc is not for fans of hyperblast showoffs or technical wanking. You won't find any of that here. Certainly for fans of groovier riffing and all-around great riffs.

I wish that more bands played this substyle of groove "death". Unfortunately they're scarce. Solid riffing is the very foundation of metal, in my opinion. Lipid's foundation is strong.

Too few ideas in too many songs. - 67%

Harachte, October 25th, 2004

After a failed co-operation with the US label Pavement Records the Danish band Lipid decided to try its’ luck with another label in order to release their first full-length ‘Hagridden’.
Founded in the middle of the nineties, the band plays a mix between old Bay Area Thrash and more modern rhythms, with the emphasis on the latter. A comparison with a heavier Machinehead or a slower Sepultura is quite obvious really.
Something that also strikes are the transparent production and the vocals of Søren Hartlev Pedersen, somehow he sometimes manages to get his growls off-key, which sounds actually funny!

Lipid is a nice example of a band that is well-endowed in both the musical as well as in the productional department, but is severely lacking in the creative department. It’s all sounding mediocre with too few ideas in too many songs so to speak.
All in all a reasonable debut but Lipid should create an own identity a.s.a.p. And please throw in some tempos as well!

Perhaps they have a future - 63%

Here's the first full length from Lipid. Well, not all that new really. It's a mere combination of their two previous releases. The songs from 1999's God We Have Slain EP are here, and the songs from 2001's Hagridden EP are here too. Maybe thats why Lipid chose to name this full length cd 'Hagridden' too. Since I have not heard either of those EP's, I can't comment on anything like how the production may have changed, or anything like that, though I assume it has been beefed up. One thing that is noticable right away, is that since the band has obviously had a lot of time to practice together, they perform the songs with perfection and play as tight as an astronauts anus on take-off.

So Lipid is skilled, but what exaclty do they contribute that is any different to the vast number of other contributers to the Scandinavian scene? Well nothing, just solid headbangable material. The style that Lipid seem to play is moderately paced simplistic and slightly predictable death/thrash, with a lot of groove and an emphasis on solid chunky riffing. It certainly is catchy, there is even some melody scattered in the songs, it's just not all that memorable. Lipid sounds somewhat like Darkane, or a slower version of Carnal Forge, with a guttural vocalist who doesn't sound too far off from the vocalists in Grave or Entombed. The standout track for this cd would be Cathartic Rage, so if you feel like checking this band out that would be a good song to start with.

Skilled, yes. Unique, not very. Certainly not bad though, I wouldn't advise ignoring this cd, it does have its moments. Apparently Lipid had some contract problems or something, and now that they finally do have a full length cd out, perhaps they have a future.
