Drowning in Formaldehyde - Blistering Corpse Abortion

SlamSlamSlam Sla Slam SlamSlam (repeat) - 20%

KilGore666, January 17th, 2010

Drowning in Phemaldehyde is one of Mark Rawls’ many brutal death metal projects, and might I mention that they all sound exactly the same? I bought this release, Blistering Corpse Abortion, only because of Guttural Engorgement, which is some pretty decent slam death metal, not the greatest, but listenable none the less. This release, however, is far from Guttural Engorgement, or just about any other slam death metal release. It sounds like an unfinished demo, with many tracks from all of their other releases. With just about any slam death metal band, most of the tracks will sound very similar, in just that they are pretty much the same thing over and over again. Don’t get me wrong though, I love the genre, but every track from BCA I swear is exactly the same.

When it comes to the quality of the album, it’s not bad. It’s no Abominable Putridity, but it’s definitely listenable. One big problem ive noticed is that the drums are barely on time with the guitar, keyword barely. The music slows down and speeds up a lot, and during these transitions, the drums are very noticeably off. The vocals are typical Mark Rawls vocals: very deep and guttural, with a few pig squeals here and there. Sounds like the bass is playing the exact same thing the guitar is throughout the entire album, and it is very hard to hear.

I’m going to take apart only one track from this album, because like ive said, they all pretty much sound the same. And we have track 5. Stabwound Orgasm…Stabwound Orgasm? Wait, wasn’t that an Avulsed album? Yes, yes it was, damn good one too. Anyways, this is the longest track, weighing in at 2:44. Starts with a deep guttural, then right in to a slam riff where the drums are off, then into some faster riffs with some pretty good blasting, this goes on for a while. All the while incomprehensible “Rawls gutturals” in the background. And finally at about 1:33 we go back to intro slam, drums still off a bit. A few pinch harmonics here and there, and the slamming continues on until it fades out. That’s about it, pretty simple, but not that great. Good song to go on a murderous rampage to though.

All in all, I say stay away from this album and just go with some Guttural Engorgement. Or maybe check out Mark Rawls’ Christian slam death metal band, whatever it’s called. I know I won’t!
