Alkonost - Shadows of Glory

A good start. - 85%

Velvokai, January 9th, 2005

Overall this demo is a very good effort (for a first demo), though the production isn’t the greatest. The vocals are drowned in the mix, though possibly it’s for the best, so they don’t overshadow the music, which seems to have been the object of the band. The subtle use of keyboards makes adds an excellent aura to this demo.

The first track starts off with an acoustic guitar intro, and then the electric guitar comes in. The vocals are more or less standard for a folk black band, while the music is much less black, and much more doom/melodic death like, though still with a black touch. This mid-paced song seems like a soundtrack to reading a medieval book about heroic tales of some ancient warrior.

The next track starts off much more black metal, sort of early Cruachan (Tuatha Na Gael) like. With similar melodies, and voice used. The main riff, though being repeated a great many times doesn’t get annoying, which is quite surprising. The song ends with an acoustic and keyboard outro, which sounds almost like a lullaby.

The last song starts off similar to the second song, though slower. Overall it does not seem too different (in a good way) from the second track. Though the acoustic and keyboard interlude in the middle makes it the standout on the demo. Some moments of this song sound like slower Ensiferum parts, while others, as I said before, sound not unlike Cruachan. Closer to the end, surprisingly, you’ll hear a catchy Butterfly Temple-esque bridge.
