Vomepotro - Liturgy of Dissection

Liturgy of Dissection - 70%

Written based on this version: 2009, CD, Rapture Records

Vomepotro was a Brazilian brutal death metal band ala Inherit Disease, Disgorge and the likes. I usually tend to shy away from brutal death metal in general because I cannot really stand to listen to it for extended periods of time. However, when the mood hits for some gory music, I always like to indulge in some classic brutal death metal like Pyrexia and Disgorge. I came across Vomepotro while searching for Latin American death metal. At first I felt a little bit wary about this band, given that their image ticks off every brutal death metal cliche that has ever existed.

Fortunately enough for me, Vomepotro have proved to be quite talented when it comes to creating interesting brutal death metal. Each song has its own unique flow and structure, and while each song on the album is united by a common genre, they all contain their own little eccentricities that provides them with a sort of sadistic charm. The guitar work on this album is exceptional. Even though the guitarists clearly have the talent to do all sort of whacky technical shit on their axe, they still manage to balance the technical aspect with the more primitive and brutal aspects of guitar work. The bass is mostly inaudible however, there are certain moments where it is allowed to shine even though it never takes things to the extreme and plods alongside the rest of the band quite nicely.

The vocals on this album vary between guttural screams, pig squeals and classic old-school growls. This level of variety does a nice job to elevate the vocalist from the rest of other other vocalists within this sub-genre who never try to break any boundaries or try something different. This vocal experimentation is commendable. The band's drummer is a total fucking beast. He knows his craft very well and some drum-patterns on this album are pretty intricate yet heavy at the same time. The tempo at which this album trudges along is freakishly fast, yet not so fast as to be considered grindcore.

Overall, Liturgy of Dissection is quite an impressive follow up to their debut album. Vomepotro have mastered the formula required to create an interesting and captivating album. Each song tells its own tale and has enough sonic motion to be considered as one of the best albums within this sub-genre. I would strongly recommend anyone who is into brutal death metal to check this band out, and this release in particular since it is a big step-up from their debut album.

Vomepotro - Liturgy of dissection - 75%

When I receive death metal promos it’s often of the old school variant, and when it’s to the more brutal side of the genre it’s rarely an outright brutal death metal record. It’s seldom I receive slabs of serial butchering, gore spattering, limb chopping death metal, which is funnily what I mostly listen to. So I’m ecstatic Vomepotro decided to send me a promo of their second fullength, entitled "Liturgy of dissection". I haven’t heard their debut from a few years ago, but I’m certainly not opposed to looking it up after hearing this one.

At a first listen it’s easy to rub this off as just another brutal death metal album like any other, but listening a little more closely you’ll discover there’s a lot more going on here. The riffing has a slamming aspect to it somewhat akin to Devourment, and they seem to wander the landscapes of both slam and brutal (in the sense of death metal’s subgenres, that is). It’s full on blasting one minute, and the next second it can go to the point of ultra-slam brutality in the ways of Abominable Putridity, all while retaining that particular cookie monster gurgle for vocals. The song structures vary, and there is tons of variation in between tracks just as each track has a load of tempo changes and whatnot. They’re certainly competent enough in both writing and executing technically adept brutality that’s versatile. A lot of bands of the style tend to write too similar songs, with the end-result of it becoming bland and boring after a while, but Vomepotro doesn’t stop short of incorporating other aspects of death metal as well, so as to not wind up in the pile of forgetfulness.

There are a couple of moments when I can’t help but to think of Nile, and I think in particular for the guitar solos, which are slickly executed here. And amongst the headbanger-friendly slam sections and neck-breaking blasting one can’t help but to actually detect a sense of old school melody as well, to which I at times think Morbid Angel and at times think Cannibal Corpse. Musically Vomepotro are right on the money, but unfortunately the production doesn’t live up to the greatness of the writing. I’d definitely like a much thicker and heavier sound quality. The drum sound is weak, to be perfectly honest, and the guitars aren’t as chunky as I’d like. But on the other hand it’s not as horrendous one might think, and it’s without a doubt manageable. I’m absolutely certain I’ll go back listening to "Liturgy of dissection" every now and then.

Vomepotro are a Brazillian Death Metal band proving that not everything has to sound like crap these days. They might not be the most original band ever, but they actually do some pretty cool shit on this sophomore effort of theirs. Now, I have not heard this band's debut album, but judging by this album, it can't be that bad at all! Liturgy of Dissection sounds a bit basic at first, with fast tempos and gurgly Cookie Monster-ish vocals; a pretty standard Death Metal template that would probably turn off most fans of the cleaner genres like Power or Prog Metal no matter how much they'd like to appreciate this genre - I do not like these vocals much myself; they are rather unappealing and even sort of irritating, but I guess they fit the genre and there isn't too much to really complain about. The shitty drum sound is inexcusable though, this is just annoying.

Plus, we also have great stuff on here, like the songwriting. I don't listen to a whole lot of bands like this, but I do really dig the aggressive, crunchy Death Metal riffing that flows underneath everything here like a river under a bridge. The guitars just never stop churning out killer shit on this album, with every song having a virtual whirlwind of riffing madness that will bring a smile to any seasoned Death Metal listener, right from the opening barrage of "Incorruption." This band doesn't fuck around with silly intros, they just kick right into the meat - well, after a short movie quote at least. "Cephalic Fast Food," "Buried in Collective Grave" and "Assassin Psychopath" all have kickass riffs that come at you like a fucking bullet train. The intensity level is always high and the aggression here is really good. Vomepotro have a very promising future if they can keep doing stuff like this.

Another interesting thing about this is the leads and the solos, which sound very much inspired by modern Technical Death Metal - a strange choice, but it works. Just check out the awesomely layered "Defaced by Pestilence" or the blistering "Horror Humanufacture." These songs just have great solo sections, complex, melodic and furious all at the same time. This whole album is like a pot luck of extreme metal influences that ends up sounding very unique to these ears, so if you're looking for a new and promising band to tide you over until the next Morbid Angel album comes out, picking up Vomepotro's Liturgy of Dissection would not be a bad idea.

Hostile and vorpal sharp - 90%

Despite the erotic cover image, I didn't find this Brazilian band's debut Zombie Gore Vomit to be entirely compelling. Not the case with Liturgy of Dissection, for the band has honed it's ultra brutality to a razor fine edge capable of severing even the most stubborn artery. Taking their queues from the brutal and catchier USDM scene, they literally splatter your guts out across 9 original tracks, and then toss on tasteful covers of Sepultura's "Mass Hypnosis" and Morbid Angel's "Dominate".

I can't stress enough just effective the band's tone is on this album. The guitars sound hostile and vorpal sharp, seriously the band is just a tightly-strung guillotine with a mind of it's own. The compositions are brutastic, the band really knows how to balance it's chugging mayhem with some truly menacing note selections. For myself, this is that intangible factor which determines the quality of real death metal, and Vomepotro has it with this album. Cristiano Martinez' guttural slam vocals fit in so well with the slicing battery surrounding them that it's difficult not to walk away from this record without a broken neck.

You can pick any of the original tracks here and be impressed, provided you like quality brutal death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse, earlier Morbid Angel, etc. "Incorruption" is an excellent onslaught to open the album. "Defaced by Pestilence" knocked me the fuck back with its intense Corpse-like grooves. "Assassin Psychopath" will grind your bones into brittle. "Horror Humanufactor" opens with a perfectly creepy arpeggio. "Postmortiis Rectaliation" delivers a Carcass vibe to it, straight from the surgery ward. There are no losers on this album, even the covers are performed well, though by the time I got to them I couldn't care less as I had been gutted and beheaded by the band's originals.

Liturgy of Dissection is one of the best brutal Brazilian death metal efforts I've ever heard. It may lack a little in the originality department, but most bands of this style do. That doesn't stop it from completely kicking ass. Vomepotro captures their material with the perfect euphoria of a killer stalking its prey. Hostile and violent but retaining the truly sinister vibe evident in all the band's influences. Absolutely check this out if you like extreme death metal.
