Dead Shell of Universe - Tamo gde pupoljak vene... tamo je moje seme

French black metal from Serbia? - 85%

I've been waiting for more bands to take up the mighty gauntlet laid down by Deathspell Omega, and Dead Shell of Universe is one of the few that has come along. They aren't as complex or as interesting as their heroes, but they've pulled off something pretty impressive nonetheless. The band's liberal use of dissonance puts them in alignment with a lot of the bands in the amazing French black metal scene--along with DSO, there's a little Blut Aus Nord in there, and the slow melodies remind me a lot of Darvulia. These slower, more melodic parts are when the band really shows their potential. The melodies evoke a huge, otherwordly atmosphere, and the slower pace allows the lush, atonal chords a lot of space to breathe. The faster parts are a little less successful, I think, and aren't complex enough to be really compelling. Still, they're pretty damn good, and the band switches things up enough to keep things entertaining. They do interesting things with vocals at times, laying a kind of dissonant chanting over some of the faster sections. Mostly, the music sounds a lot like their influences, but there are a few glimmers of originality in there, and this band could be one of the giants in the scene before long. I could have done without the last track, which is basically a doomy ambient piece--it's atmospheric, but ultimately comes off sounding like filler. Overall, though, this is an extremely promising debut.
