Lordi - Deadache

Boredi? - 65%

Flamos, November 3rd, 2008

Lordi have made a name of themselves over the few years with catchy tunes with dark themes, this proves hat now a days a dark band can actually come out with a hit. I give them credit for this, on account it’s difficult these days unless you’re a generic emo band. How does their new opus, “Deadache” hold up?

Well, lets begin with the good. The production here is top notch, which isn’t surprising considering the commercial success the band is receiving. The vocals from Mr. Lordi are crisp and clean here, the guitars sometimes feel undistorted, the drumming is clearly noticeable. It’s a good thing of course. Mr. Lordi performs the vocals themselves well and uniquely. The only complaint is the fact on the more ballad-like songs the singing is definitely out of place when alone. Layered it’s fine, but when alone it’s sometimes laughable. I would consider this a more rock oriented album then a metal one. Which I suppose can be annoying to some. “Girls Go Chopping” is the best song on here with its comedic lyrics about woman killing people and cool riffs, with a surprisingly good solo. Overall it’s enjoyable. “Mr. Sin is in” is also good, with and simplistic but likable riff with a catchy chorus. Although after a minute or so you’ll get all you need with the song. “Raise Hell In Heaven” has its moments, but it repeats itself an awful lot.

The rest I didn’t mention is basically filler. Some songs like “Missing Miss Charlene” and “Bites Like A Bulldog” have their moments, but its something not so interesting. “Monsters Keep Me Company” is a pretty bad song with bad vocals and laughable lyric writing.

This is an average album. If you’re fan of Lordi you’ll like a few songs here, otherwise you may find yourself searching for more, but won’t find it.
