When music really becomes art. - 82%

Asamaniac, November 5th, 2008

Such names always send shivers down my spine since these two well known and talented musicians have haunted my Metal dreams since I was a child. Since I am young I grew up listening to bands other than the classic IRON MAIDEN, MANOWAR, HELLOWEEN and stuff many kids here in Greece listen to when they get in touch with our beloved music for the first time. I had a love towards the extreme side of music right from the start and two bands that I really liked were VINTERSORG and BORKNAGAR.

You are trying to understand what do these two bands have to do with CRONIAN, right? Well, you already understood if you know Hedlund and Brun, but for the people who are unaware of these names, they are people who have play in these two bands. Although the idea of having this project existed since 2000, the CRONIAN idea was not materialized until 2005. Since then, these two musicians have released an album - their debut one - through Century Media Records.

Their new album, which is their sophomore full-length effort, is released through the Norwegian label Indie Recordings, a label that in my opinion matches the band’s music and ideology much more than Century Media did. Drawing - unavoidably - influences from their main bands, as well as from bands like WATERCLIME (a project Hedlund runs) and FRANTIC BLEEP, CRONIAN create an imposing monster full of complexity, smooth brutality and mind jarring drumming! Their incredible composing skills have led them to the creation of something that I can only describe as Art Progressive/Black Metal. The Black Metal rebellious attitude remains, while it is dressed in a sophisticated veil that can spit its poison in your face and you won’t even realize it!

Their near death experiences and emotional extremities based lyrical themes are just the best sauce this poisonous dish could have. Just imagine the music these guys can create together and just add the incredibly sick vocals we already know by Hedlund. His clean vocals are just hypnotizing you and travelling you to planet "Cronian", while his Black Metal screams drag you back to reality just to remind you of how perishable you are. No rating this time guys. After all despite my characterization earlier I would never spoil this gem putting it under any tag. Not Metal, not Rock. Just music...
