Cryptic Wintermoon - A Coming Storm

Is Gothenburg in Germany? - 80%

antipath, February 4th, 2005

This band was spawned by members of the german Death/Trash band Violation. I personally prefer Violation because their sound is less derivitive. Never the less, "A Coming Storm" showcases tremendous musical skill. There are lots of great guitar solos, subtle keyboard created atmospheres, blasting drum assaults, and acoustic guitar passages. The vocals vary slightly from song to song, but usually stay with a very Gothenburg type style. This is the only part of the record that I dont really like. I am one of the guys who pretty much thinks that melodic death metal had its best days end around 1995. I hate the Gothenburg vocal style anyway, so its almost painful to hear it ripped off by a German band. There are some really great German bands that use average, but not outdated vocal styles ( Violation, Anasarca, Dark Fortress....) Anyway, I mostly like this record, but if youre the type who jerks off to mid era Inflames or has a multiple orgasm everytime you hear Slaughter of the Soul, then this is really for you. If that isnt you, then this is still worth a listen for the great musicianship.
