Abominant - Warblast

Abominant - Warblast CD - 65%

Phuling, February 18th, 2009

My first Abominant experience was "Triumph of the kill", the predecessor to Warblast, and it certainly didn’t impress me. It left me with a feeling of nothingness, like I could just as well have been doing something completely different, leaving no impression whatsoever. So I didn’t have high hopes for this album, and shunned the moment when I actually would have to listen to it. But damn, as soon as the intro was over I found all my fears and initial antipathy shattered.

Unfortunately this doesn’t carry on throughout the entire half-hour. "Warblast" is yet again another album of prolific old school US death metal that doesn’t bring anything new to the genre, nor is it good enough to still be really enjoyable. This is still better than "Triumph of the kill". The production is way better and the songs are slightly more interesting. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the musicianship, it’s still good. And the music carries slight similarities to act such as Deicide, Incantation, Morbid Angel, Zyklon and whatnot. But let’s face it; there are tons of other bands out there doing the exact same thing, and in many cases way better.

It’s just not very interesting, it’s all been done before. Sorry to rain all over Abominant’s parade, but their eight album is not something I’d recommend unless you crave another redundant album collecting dust on your shelves.
