Infernum - The Dawn Will Never Come

I've heard much better - 50%

Pestbesmittad, February 17th, 2008

Sadly, Infernum’s first demo isn’t very exciting. Why? Well, first of all the sound is pure crap. Whereas “Damned Majesty” had an enjoyable type of raw sound, “The Dawn Will Never Come” has a shitty type of raw sound. Here the sound is very thin, distorted and powerless. It feels like all the instruments have been crammed into a little box. I suspect that they’ve recorded the drums and the guitars live in the rehearsal room on a porta studio and added vocals and synths later on. Speaking of vocals, they’re buried almost completely in the mix and this fact certainly doesn’t improve matters. The sound isn’t so bad that you can’t tell what’s going on but it’s still annoying as hell and trying stay focused on the music is a major chore. For example, the guitar sounds like a wall of buzz that keeps the drums and the vocals behind it.

The synths are used in a different way on this demo than on “Damned Majesty”. They are only used as intros on tracks like “Dark Ritual” and “Desecration”, never during the actual tracks. Another problem aside from the sound on this demo concerns the songwriting. The material is nowhere as strong as that of “Damned Majesty”. For the most part “The Dawn Will Never Come” sounds like average early 90s black metal without anything that really stands out. The best track is “Dark Ritual” since it actually has good riffs and the intro to this track is pretty good too. Another track that is acceptable is “Sorrows”, on which some clean guitar is used in order to add a sorrowful feel. “The Dawn Will Never Come” is certainly not a classic and pretty insignificant a black metal demo in general. Infernum would go on to produce much better material.
