Amboog-a-Lard - A New Hope

Unique Thrash - 85%

junnvox, January 14th, 2008

Once again I was looking through the free downloads post and the free metal downloads blog and came across this band. I remember reading about them in the early 90's and decided to download this CD, I'm sure glad I did.

On to the review, this is some great thrash in the Bay area style with just enough different elements to make it sound fresh. Most of the music brings to mind Testament and Mordred with a few progressive touches. the vocalist reminds me when he growls of Chuck Billy on the Demoniac album he also uses some nice if not very strong clean vocals. The guitar work features some very strong riffs and decent but not very flashy soloing. The bass just tends to follow along most of the times with some more flashy playing from time to time mostly in a more funky vein which is where i get the Mordred comparison. The drumming is standard yet strong thrash drumming nothing to complain about.

The songwriting is well done yet pretty typical of the time and some of the songs get a bit boring lacking in dynamics. All in all a fine release which should have found a home on a good label. I f you are a fan of the Bay area thrash style you should download this ASAP.
