Ragnarok - Domgeorn

A good effort of making something unique - 65%

Meztone, June 29th, 2005

I bought this album off ebay randomly because I’m really into other folk metal bands like Ensiferum, Finntroll, Midnattsol etc etc, I have to say that I have never heard an album like this before. They mix some black metal with a lot of folk/medieval styles but it doesn’t always work well, there is a lot of talking and sound effects throughout the whole album instead of actual music which adds to the atmosphere but can become a bit annoying. I also think that there are too many harsh vocals over acoustic guitars and other melodic music plus the album could have done with some better riffs.

The album starts off quite well with some couple of good tracks like Wodnesuno, which reminds me a bit of a skyclad song, some average metal riffs with harsh vocals, and the 3rd track, which is a nice catchy melodic song. After that the album starts getting worse by the track until you get to track 10, Samhain, which is probably the best track on the album which has a nice folk tune which turns into a black metal song and it even has a respectable guitar solo in. Tracks 11 – 13 are also quite good songs keeping up with the folk/black metal theme and then track 14 is a very interesting cover of Manowar’s Heart Of Steel.

This is a very original album with good use of extra instruments like celtic harps, side drums, whistles and fiddles but maybe lacked on guitar playing and tracks 4 – 9 could have used a bit more work. I would recommend this album to anyone with an open mind looking for something completely different or someone who is really into folk/black metal bands. I would say the best tracks on the album are Wodnesuno, þonne Waeron We Haeleð, Samhain and John Barleycorn.
