Prophanity - Stronger than Steel

Beyond Typical Death Metal - 79%

PowerMetalGuardian, July 20th, 2004

Prophanity's long awaited debut album offers up a nice offering of death metal. Of course getting a lot of help from King Diamond's guitarist Andy LaRocque has helped. Most of the music is typical death metal. Deep, deep growled vocals, fast and very technical guitar riffs, and blazing drum fills with an occasional blast beat.

Though this album offers just another death metal album fitting the death metal mold. There is just a pinch more that makes this album worth it all. What makes this album worth owning is how the songs are structured. The guitar riffs are very technical; giving us a reason to head bang on every song. The solo's and lead parts are just brilliant and fast. Sometimes it sounds like DragonForce, with Prophanity's sure speed.

Most of the songs are Viking like (lyrically), which is why I would defiantly classify this band as being another Amon Amarth. The song structures are actually pretty similar between the two. With great song structure, the drummer in this band really knows how to bring it up to the next level. His drumming style is very different from most of your straight blast beat death metal drummers. Songs like Towards the Sinister Realm shows how good he is, and how well he can go from a slow tempo to a fast one in seconds.

Without these key elements I have just explained, this band would just be another death metal band to catalogue and forget about. But since these elements remain, it would be a wise idea to check out this band. Good songs to check out are Armed to the Teeth, Beast of the North, and ...to Hangatyr -though most of the songs on this album are worth a spin.
