The Seventh Power - Dominion & Power

Transcending genres equipped with robot vocals - 80%

Andromeda_Unchained, May 15th, 2009

This is actually a really interesting album. From the cover I was expecting to hear something along the lines of Manticora or Eidolon, and in terms of heaviness I was right. The Seventh Power display a more mid-paced style, their music is pretty crushing at times, nice big crunchy guitars reminding me a lot of the fret-work on Pagan's Mind Enigmatic Calling, the guitar tones being almost identical. Now The Seventh Power aren't the most technical band around, the majority of the riffs on display here are pretty simple. However it is the conviction in which these riffs are played that makes the material so special. I can assure you the blood will be pumping, especially with tracks such as the badass "Everlasting Fire". There's certainly quite a bit of doom influence, a recipe for some truly punishing metal. The vocals are quite bizarre, sounding not unlike Timeless Miracle vocalist Mikael Holst in the mid range – the interesting twist however is the slight effect to the vocals giving an almost robot-like feel.

The stick smashing on Dominion & Power is handled very tastefully, with some fantastic use of the double bass pedal and some quality use of symbols to accent the riffs. Subtle keys work can be heard throughout which helps give a dense feel to the songs. There are also rather catchy tracks, such as previously mentioned "Everlasting Fire" and "King of All Kings," that can very easily become lodged in your mind. These guys are pretty hard to pigeon-hole, hence my simple label of Heavy Metal but I feel fans of Progressive, Power or Doom could easily find something to love about The Seventh Wonder, and what's not to like. These guys serve up a very charming style of metal without sacrificing their heaviness. Check this out as it's pretty damn interesting.
