Symbel - We Drink - Hymns and Council of Anglosaxon Heathenry

Real and pure Heathen Metal - 90%

WasselGrove, October 1st, 2009

I do not at all understand the last review and have joined this site to say what I think. Apparently the reviewer is comparing SYMBEL's music with the circus that has been pagan metal the last few years, and I don't think he ( or she?! ) knows what they talk about. Well I say to you if you want heathen metal then just follow the trends until they die ( if they haven't already of course).

I 'got' SYMBEL's music when I first heard it from Wulfstan of FOREFATHER. This is something real, not a colouring book for children. I am half english, half German so I enjoy this connection with Symbel's art. Let me start with the atmosphere and the words. They create the perfect atmosphere. The lyrics are fantastic and show perfectly an understanding of the old cultures of the AngloSaxons and relevance to today's world. I believe that this music is shamanist like the old gods such as Woden in English. Yes it is sometimes old school and sometimes folkish, this was relevant for many people in 2003 before the big explosion - just because other bands now play it cleaner to click track and in a big studio doesn't bother me at all. It seems that the aforementioned guy had a big 'benefit of hindsight' to judge this album.

When I first heard this album I didn't like it because it seemed to keep changing and I just wanted to listen to sometihng that was relaxing I think. But it drew me in and I got reading the lyrics and that was it! Amazing! The Willing Suspension of Disbelief has amazing guitars and I love his vocals on this. Also the best track is the last one on the album ' Sittaen Aet Symbel'. It makes you think that the whole time you were waiting for this perfect song. The journey is varied ( as the lyrics tell a story unfolding ). Overall I give it 90 because there are some imperfections in production but in spirit and songs writing I give it 100. You need to hear this with the lyrics if you can get them! They are more intelligent than the newer bands who just sing the same old shit. Heed the call!
