Necropsy - Bestial Anatomy

Pleasant surprise - 95%

Decapitater, June 26th, 2008

As I took the first look at the cover artwork, I was a bit afraid, because such a sleek, modern styled front cover without any cut-off limbs or splattered brains does not really look like something you would expect when it comes to brutal death metal.

If there would such a genre as melodic brutal death metal, these frenchmen should be called its pioneers. Without any intro comes the flood of brutality which turns into something much complex as these guys mix many genres, but only when talking about the instruments, since the vocals remain brutal as it is meant to be. Every song contains thrashy riffs, short but great solos, catchy melodies and of course many grind sections.

I have to say, I just adore the vocals on this release. Gil, the vocalist, did a great job in those 3 days they spent in the studio recording their first full-lenght album. His voice never gets boring since he varies it and at many points the vocal follows the lead, fits the melodies so good, that you have no doubt everything's in place.

The sound quality of this release is more than satisfying, the guys at Newdream studio did a great job. Finally a brutal death metal band who don't use programmed drums and you don't get just constant grinding, but various drumwork.

To sum it up, I really enjoyed the whole album and I couldn't pick any of the tracks to announce it as the best or worst, because all of them are rememberable since you don't get just get a bucket of brutal vomit. Even if I like it, when I feel like being raped by a furious elephant after listening to a brutal death metal album, I have to admit that I really enjoyed listening to Necropsy. The only thing that made me give them only 95 percents in my rating is the short playtime. You get only 25 minutes of their deadly stuff for your money, but it's totally worth it. Even if I had to get up from the couch to press that damn play button on my stereo everytime Bestial Anatomy turned into silence calling for more and more of this kinky stuff.
