Doom Fucking Metal!!!!! - 96%

Reaper, August 5th, 2004

I am extremely glad that I had the chance to purchase this album. This is what Doom Metal is supposed to sound like. Slow, heavy, tuned down guitars and vocals with simplistic, yet mind blowing sound. Melancholic, depressive and giving of a dark fucking vibe, are all great ways to describe this album. The sound can vary from an extremely simplistic slow cymbal hitting with heavy bass in the background to a relatively faster tuned down guitar sound with deep growling vocals, as in the song “Scattered Ashes,” where the transition from one sound to the other is extremely well done.

The song “Blackened Lies” is so simplistic at times; that it makes one wonder how the band came up with such brilliance. Because all of the songs are rather long, My Shameful had a lot of time to include both the simplistic and the more Death Metal oriented aspects, which they are clearly trying to get across in this album. The Death Metal part of the songs and the album, are best described as “faster doom,” in the case of this band.

If there were a song that I would choose to represent Doom Metal, this next song would be it. “A Saddened Sunset” is a brilliant, slow, heavy as hell song, this time without the Death Metal sound, just clean slow doom metal. At around six minutes into the song, the bass is dropped and just the low clean vocals and cymbal is heard for about a minute, giving a bit of variety, which makes this album so enjoyable.

“The Wind That Burns All” is relatively more upbeat, with very few vocals. It’s not my favorite song from the album, but it does add a lot of variety, which does not make the album repetitive, and therefore is a huge plus.

The rest of the songs are all genius. “Beneath” having cleaner, more understandable vocals with the introduction of some simple keyboard sounds. “I Fear” is probably the most melancholic song of the album, giving of a vibe so dark not even light could escape it. The last song, “Blamed,” is a very appropriate way to end an amazing album, a bit faster than the other songs, with some great drum work towards the end. The vocals towards the end gave me chills, as they will give you.

This is a highly recommended album and band. I can’t wait for their next release, as Doom Metal bands like these, are very difficult to come by. This album is a gem like no other. If you’re into Doom, this is the band for you, if you want to know what Doom is, listen to My Shameful.
