Torgeist - Time of Sabbath

Decent drummer, but the rest sucks - 25%

KFD, October 7th, 2023

This demo has been released as the first part of a split with Vlad Tepes. It's a real shame because Vlad Tepes songs are among the best ever recorded in France, while this Torgeist demo is far below average.

I can sum up pretty fast the content of Time Of Sabbath: a shitty old-school synth intro sounding like an early-80's bad videogame soundtrack, then five black metal songs consisting of an overdistorted unlistenable guitar playing very poor and uninspired riffs, led by decent black metal drumming and topped with monotonous harsh vocals which sound like white noise.

There is literally nothing interesting to hear in this demo, except the drums (which is the reason why I rated it 25%, but drums would be better heard alone), and the ear-hostile production makes me wanna turn it off very fast.

Torgeist got famous because they were associated with the Black Legions, but they had very few talent and they do not deserve attention, considering the fact that France had much better bands a the time, including inside the Black Legions Circle, like Vlad Tepes, Belketre or even Brenoritzvorkre (which at least had an original sonic concept).

I also strongly despise the stupid teenage satanic concept and imagery, because it is very cliché and common - but it kinda fits with the music.

If you're looking for dark, dissonant black metal from the Black Legions, listen to Belketre instead.

Trve raw black metal - 100%

One of the more underrated Black Legions band was made of several important and key figures in the French Black Legions scene; Lord Beleth'Rim (voice, guitar), Lord Aäkon Këëtrëh (guitar), Vordb Dréagvor Uëzéërb (bass) and A Dark Soul (drums). For any LLN elitist this is the closest to being a dream team lineup considering that you have the masterminds of such bands like; Amaka Hahina, Moëvöt, Belketre, Aäkon Këëtrëh, Vermeth and so on. Judging from the first song 'March Of The Black Assemblies' it sounds like something straight from an Amaka Hahina demo. The vocal delivery is top notch and resembles something like a snake. I would say that it all sounds a lot like Vermeth but everything is sped up a bit more. A different, slightly louder mix of this demo made it on to the Black Legions Metal split with Vlad Tepes.

I would say that 'Flame Of Hate', 'Bloody Tears' and 'Time Of Sabbath' are the standout tracks on an essential black metal release and one of, if not the best Les Legions Noires release, at least in my opinion. My only gripe is they didn't make it longer and I wish they would reunite. In a way the band has continued under the Vermeth (also highly recommended) name since it's practically a solo project for Beleth'Rim so it isn't all gone.
